What Is A Chess Stopwatch?

A chess stopwatch, usually called a chess clock, gives White and Black separate linked countdowns. Only one side runs at a time. When a player finishes a move and presses the active clock, that side stops and the opponent clock begins. This makes the clock measure each player's thinking time rather than merely recording the total length of the game.

How Do You Use The Chess Clock?

  1. 1.Choose a Bullet, Blitz, Rapid, Classical, or Delay preset, or enter a custom time control.
  2. 2.Select White Moves First or Black Moves First to begin the first player clock.
  3. 3.After completing a move, tap the active clock to stop it and start the opponent clock.
  4. 4.Use Pause when the board position, rules, or an interruption needs attention.
  5. 5.Review the remaining times and move counts, then reset when the game is complete.

How Do Increment And Delay Work?

Fischer increment adds the selected bonus after a player completes every move. A 3 + 2 game starts each player at three minutes and adds two seconds whenever that player presses the clock. Fast moves can therefore rebuild a small amount of time.

Delay protects the opening seconds of each turn. In a five-minute game with a three-second delay, the main time begins decreasing only after the player has used those three seconds. Unused delay does not accumulate. Sudden-death controls have neither increment nor delay.

Which Chess Time Control Should You Choose?

Bullet controls such as 1 + 0 are extremely fast. Blitz controls such as 3 + 2 and 5 + 0 balance speed with enough time for recognizable plans. Rapid options such as 10 + 0 and 15 + 10 allow deeper calculation without requiring a long session. Longer controls suit analysis, instruction, and thoughtful club practice. Event classifications can vary, so formal players should always use the exact control stated by the organizer.

How Does The Timing Stay Accurate?

The clock measures elapsed time from high-resolution timestamps. Visual animation frames only refresh the display; they do not define how much time has passed. This prevents an ordinary slow frame from turning into accumulated stopwatch drift. Keep the page open and the device awake during play because operating systems can suspend inactive browser pages.
